Apex's Knox fired 70 to lead individual standings, Providence leads tight race in NCHSAA 4-A golf

May 12, 2009
North Carolina

PINEHURST - Andy Knox of Apex had the only sub-par round of the day and holds the lead in the individual standings after Monday's opening day of the 73rd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men's golf championships at Pinehurst No. 6.

The championship is being contested on a par-72 layout set at 6,658 yards or the NCHSAA event.

Knox had a 70 and holds a two-shot advantage over three golfers, including Quent Mather of Charlotte Myers Park, Zach Munroe of Charlotte Providence and Stratten Waldt of Northern Durham.

Patrick Sawrey of Smithfield-Selma and Cary Green Hope's Michael Cromie each had 73s, three shots back.

Charlotte Providence recorded a team score of 304 and holds a narrow one-shot advantage over Green Hope, which had won three of the last five 4-A titles before last year's tournament. Northern Durham is at 306, just two shots back, and defending team champ Pinecrest has a 310.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action is scheduled to resume at 8:15 on Tuesday morning.

Wendy's is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.
