BUIES CREEK - Robert Hoadley of Cameron Union Pines won his second individual title in the last three years on Tuesday in the 24th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men¹s golf championships at the Keith Hills Country Club. Hoadley, who was the 2007 3-A champ and tied for ninth last year, fired a blistering six-under 66 on the final day of play to record a winning total of 136. There was a four-way tie for second that necessitated a playoff and Robert Register of Burlington Williams, last year¹s individual champion, took second with an eagle on the second playoff hole. However, it finally took six extra holes before James Chapman of Gastonia Forestview finished third, Trey White of Hickory fourth and Ryan Yarbrough of Wilson Fike fifth. The quartet all had 139¹s, three shots off the pace, in regulation. The championship was held on a par-72, 6500-yard layout for the NCHSAA event. Hickory outdueled defending team champion Wilson Fike and Burlington Williams to win the team championship. The Red Tornadoes carded an excellent 588, including a 290 on Tuesday, to take the title by six shots over Fike. Williams was third at 597 and Gastonia Forestview placed fourth at 603. The best four of six individual scores counted toward the team total. Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments. A total of 84 golfers competed in the two-day event. Wendy¹s is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.
