Beddingfield 2, North Johnston 2
The match schedulers, who strive for competitive matches, probably couldn't have been happier with the Beddingfield versus North Johnston game.
As the only game featuring two area teams, the Bruins and Panthers matched each other goal-for-goal in a 2-2 tie Saturday in The Brittany Willis Memorial Scholarship Boys Soccer Showcase at the J. Burt Gillette Athletic Complex.
Hunter Brame scored twice for North Johnston (0-0-1), giving it the advantage on assists by Luis Perez and Austin Coates. But Rick Diaz and Taylor Springs, on an assist by Diaz, answered both times for Beddingfield (0-2-1).
Both teams kept the other off the board in the second half.
"It was a back-and-forth game," Panthers head coach Brent Walston said. "I'm pleased with our offense. I'm pleased with the result. We bent, but we didn't break."
Bruins goalkeeper Alex Herrera made eight saves on 14 shots, while the Panthers' Jake Whitton made two -- including one key stop on a long second-half shot -- on five shots.
Beddingfield next plays rival Hunt on Tuesday, while North Johnston travels to West Johnston on Monday.
"Today, I think we played 80 minutes," Bruins head coach Maitland Barnes said. "We made some mistakes, which you're always going to make. But we didn't quit."

After one of its more solid first halves of the young season, Fike faltered in the second, as Wakefield's Jay Williams scored three of his team's four second-half goals.

Connor Schmidt scored the Golden Demons' lone goal midway through the second half.
"I thought after playing last night, we really executed well in the first half," head coach Toni Varacchi said. "... About 10 minutes into the second half, we were pretty much spent. The toll of playing 14 hours earlier really set in."
Fike goalkeeper Rob Brown made 15 saves on 30 shots. The Golden Demons (0-3), who host C.B. Aycock on Tuesday, finished with six total shots.

"We look pretty good the first half," head coach Trent Dorough said. "But the second half, we came out and we were walking. And you can't afford to walk against a team like Panther Creek.
"But about five minutes after that second goal, we decided to kick it into gear, and I thought we played really well. ... It was a good comeback for our boys."
Giampier Oblack gave the Catamounts the lead midway through the first, and Scooter Oliver, off an assist by Matt Sullivan, stretched it to 2-0 two minutes into the second.
