WILMINGTON - More than two years after problems with the Jap Davis Field House at New Hanover High arose, the 64-year-old building will be renovated.
The New Hanover County Board of Education unanimously approved $756,000 in funding to perform major renovations on the field house, needed changes which are expected to be completed by July 31.
"It's a tremendous relief," said New Hanover principal Chris Furr. "I think it gets us moving forward."
Bill Hance, assistant superintendent for operations, presented the board with five options ranging from minor renovation for $468,000 to a replacement with a larger building with facilities for girls teams for $1,560,000. The board had been waiting for a month for a structural evaluation that would determine whether the field house could withstand any renovation.
