NCHSAA Women's Dual Team Tennis finals set for Saturday

BURLINGTON - The 20th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships in women¹s dual team tennis will be held Saturday with four titles up for grabs at the Burlington Tennis Center.
The 3-A and 4-A finals will start at nine o¹clock Saturday morning with the 1-A and 2-A matches starting at noon. All of the qualifiers won regional matches on Thursday to advance to the state finals, and there are five unbeaten teams among the eight finalists.
The 4-A match will feature a pair of undefeated perennial powers as Raleigh Broughton (19-0) battles Charlotte Myers Park (18-0).
Broughton has perhaps the most impressive record of any NCHSAA school in women's dual team tennis, with eight previous state titles in 12 appearances in the championship. In addition, the Caps have compiled an incredible 70-10 all-time record in postseason play.
Myers Park slipped past Greensboro Grimsley 5-4 in a Thursday Western Regional final to qualify for its sixth state final. The Mustangs are the defending state champs.
Grace Baker of Myers Park was the 4-A singles runner-up while a pair of Broughton doubles teams played for the state title, which was won by Asha Iyengar and Katie Kane.
Charlotte Catholic (20-4) will take on Chapel Hill (16-5) for the 3-A title. Chapel Hill moved down from the 4-A ranks in the new realignment and has a strong tennis program but is making its first visit to the state dual-team finals.
Catholic has had a great record in women's dual team, with a perfect 7-0 mark in previous state championships, six in 2-A and the last one in 3-A in 2007.
Chapel Hill's Tori Helpingstine and Hannah Kimbrough won the 3-A doubles title in the individual tournament.
In 2-A, Salisbury (22-1) seeks its sixth state title in women¹s dual team tennis as the unbeaten Hornets (22-0) face perennial power Greene Central (22-6). Greene Central, in the finals for the 10th time in the tournament's 20-year history, has a 2-7 mark in previous championships and earned its last title in 2007, when it beat Salisbury 5-4.
Salisbury's Hannah Lebowitz earned the state 2-A singles championship last weekend while the Greene Central team of Lauren Carraway and Elizabeth McLawhorn were the state doubles runners-up.
The 1-A championship features two unbeaten squads as the North Carolina School of Science and Math (18-0) battles East Montgomery (17-0).
NCSSM won the '07 1-A crown while East Montgomery makes its first trip to the finals.
Teresa Pincus and Laura Outlaw of Science and Math teamed to win the state 1- doubles title last week.
