Rams Upends Bulldogs 46-12!

September 5, 2008
By james mcdougald of Purnell Swett High School

The Rams put up a much better performance against St.Pauls then they did last week.  Lighting stroke earlier but it was the weather delaying the game for an 8:05 start. - If there was a question mark for Purnell Swett heading into Friday night's game with St. Pauls, it came from the Ram secondary. After yielding 33 points and five touchdowns through the air at Wilmington Ashley last week, head coach Mark Heil had a simple solution for his defense before the bout with the Bulldogs, to keep the offense on the field. Lighting also stroke on the field with the running and passing of E. Clark and M. Locklear. "We need to play stronger in the secondary. If we do that, we'll have a pretty good team," Heil said.  The cornerbacks and safeties answered Heil's request with a resounding 46-12 blowout win.  The Rams (2-0) forced three turnovers in the first half, building a 33-6 lead at intermission. Tailback Marlin Locklear had 118 yards on 15 carries.

Quarterback Ethan Clark scored three touchdowns for the Rams and notched 175 yards of total offense, including 100 yards on the ground.

The Bulldogs managed just two first downs in the first two quarters and were sacked five times. Leading the Rams who were living in the backfield all night were JoJo Blanks, Matt Locklear, and K. Sanchez.   St. Pauls tailback, Chris McGrill worked hard for every one of his 58 rushing yards. His touchdown in the third quarter was the first of the season.

The Rams capitalized on a pair of early turnovers and took a 21-point lead with just under six minutes left in the first frame. Bulldogs (0-2) running back Tony Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 71 yards for a touchdown, trimming the deficit to 21-6 at the end of the first quarter. Locklear put an end to the Bulldogs' momentum with 9:01 remaining in the first half with his second touchdown of the game. Late in the fourth quarter, Swett finished its scoring for the game with a 19-yard scamper by D'Angelo Chavis. The Rams will meet a well rested Hoke County Bucks team whom were idled this week.  I'm sure that Coach Heil and staff will have the Rams up for the challenge.  This will be the first home game of the season.  So, get there early and "Come Out and Support the Rams"!
