Hollifield named top coach

March 31, 2009
North Carolina

By Langston Wertz Jr.
Charlotte Observer

Shelby's Aubrey Hollifield is the 2009 Associated Press N.C. All-State boys' basketball coach of the year.

Hollifield got six of a possible 16 votes from a statewide media panel after leading the 2A Golden Lions to the first state title in school history.

Winston-Salem Mount Tabor's Andy Muse (four votes), who led his school to a 4A state title, was runner-up. Gastonia Forestview's Dan Ghent, whose team reached the 3A final for the first time, was one of three coaches to get two votes.

The girls' coach of the year was East Davidson's Terry Allmon, who led his team to a 31-1 record, which included a 37-game win streak that started last season and ended in the regional playoffs. Allmon remained with his team this year despite suffering from prostate cancer. He had surgery Wednesday.
