Beddingfield loses 3-A championship game to Concord 77-62

The Lady Spiders harassed the Lady Bruins into 25 turnovers on the way to a 77-62 victory in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A title game in the Smith Center on the University of North Carolina campus.

Beddingfield, the 2006 champion, lost for just the second time in 32 games as the Lady Spiders (31-2) of the South Piedmont Conference achieved their stated goal of "32 minutes of fast and furious basketball."

Concord kick-started its transition game in the second quarter and led by as many as 19 points. The Eastern Carolina Conference Lady Bruins shot a respectable 52 percent from the floor in the first half but trailed 37-24 at halftime.

Beddingfield could get no closer than eight points in the third quarter. The Lady Bruins trailed 66-51 with about six minutes to play in the game and ran off five straight points to cut the lead to 10 with five minutes to go.

But the Lady Spiders answered with six straight points to seal their first state championship, five years after a winless season in head coach Angela Morton's first year.

Beddingfield was led by 6-foot-4 senior center Jean Best who had 21 points on 10 of 10 shooting from the floor. Best, who was the centerpiece of the best four-year run in school history, was named the Most Outstanding Player for the Lady Bruins.

Junior guards Monique Spry and Shaniqua Clay had 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Concord sophomore guard Nyshia Hammonds earned the game Most Valuable Player award as she scored 20 points.
