CG's Lavelle holds two-shot lead at NCHAA 2-A golf championship

SOUTHERN PINES ­- Ryan Lavelle of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons holds the
individual lead after the first day of the 23rd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men¹s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club on Monday.

Lavelle had a one-under par 70 was the only subpar round on Longleaf¹s par-71 layout and he holds a two-shot edge over a trio of golfers, including South Iredell¹s Clay Brown, Mayodan Dalton McMichael¹s Jay Brown and
Danny Dippel of West Henderson.
   
Jeff Boyan of Ledford, the 2007 second-place finisher, heads a group of five golfers at 75, five shots back.

In the team standings, Cardinal Gibbons holds a narrow three-shot lead over Ledford and West Henderson, with Shelby in fourth at 314. The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Ledford is the defending team champion, with Gibbons finished second and
West Henderson third in last year¹s 2-A event.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action will resume at eight o¹clock on Tuesday morning.
