ASHEVILLE – Dense, swirling snow put a premium on base hits during the early innings of Monday’s North Henderson-Owen game at McCormick Field.

But Knights coach Bill Rice knew the ironic reason why his undefeated team had braved the conditions and the Warhorses, 10-0, on the opening day of the Buncombe County baseball tournament.

“Our bats are really starting to thaw out,” Rice said. “That’s the biggest thing right now. We’re getting big hits in situations where we need them.”
