Pender girls fall in state championship

CHAPEL HILL - The Pender girls basketball team fell to Bishop McGuinness in the 1A state championship at the Dean Smith Center on Saturday, losing 56-43 to the three-time champion Villains.

Jannetta Robinson led the Patriots (30-2) with 18 points and earned Most Outstanding Player honors for the Eastern champions.


Sequoya Bland had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Muriel Seabrooks pulled down 18 rebounds for Pender, which made its first-ever appearance in the title game.


Erinn Thompson led the Villains (27-6) with 14 points and 19 rebounds, earning MVP honors as Bishop McGuinness won its third consecutive state title.
