Southern Nash celebrates top ranking with 9-0 win over Tarboro

From staff reports
Wilson Daily Times

TARBORO - Southern Nash celebrated its No. 1 ranking amount 3-A tennis teams with a 9-0 conquest of Tarboro Wednesday.

The Firebirds (11-0) moved to the top of the poll conducted by the N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association and took care of business against Tarboro, ranked sixth in the 2-A poll.

Nicolas Finet needed a third-set tiebreaker to dispatch Jacob Pearce 6-3, 4-6, (10-5) at No. 3 singles. It was the only set won by the Vikings of the Eastern Plains Conference.

The victory came a day after Southern Nash had a harder-than-expected time with Nash Central in its NEW 6 Conference opener, winning 6-3.

"Yesterday, I think we played pretty good. Tuesday I had some concerns with a couple of players but they really picked it up yesterday," Southern Nash head coach Brad Joyner said by telephone this morning. "But it's hard to gauge yourself against everyone else in the state. It's a compliment to be No. 1 but it doesn't mean anything unless you keep winning."

The Firebirds have little time to rest on their laurels as NEW 6 foe Rocky Mount comes to Stanhope today for a 4 p.m. match.
