Surprise rise by Mavericks

CHARLOTTE - Austin Lewis' rise among the best long jumpers in North Carolina parallels his team's rise among the best boys' track and field programs in the state.

Not that Mallard Creek coach John Cunningham doubted Lewis and the Mavericks would be on top eventually, just not during the program's first year.

"We thought next year would be our year," said Cunningham, who coached Vance to a state title in 2000.
