Tight races looming in NCHSAA 3-A golf championship

FOX FIRE VILLAGE - Just four shots separate the top four teams in thegolfball 1
standings after Monday¹s first day of play in the 23rd  annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men¹s golf championships at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club.

The championship is being held on the East Course at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club, a par-72, 6,500-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.

Gastonia Forestview leads the field with a 305 after a day of play under very difficult, windy conditions. Wilson Fike is two shots back at 307, with Hickory at 308 and Burlington Williams at 309.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Hickory and Forestview deadlocked for the crown last year at 305 and Hickory won on the basis of the fifth player¹s scores over the two-day competition.

Senior Michael Muscatell of Charlotte Catholic, the 2006 champion, leads the individual standings with a one-under par 71, one shot ahead of freshman
Robert Register of Burlington Williams. Billy Barham of Southeast Guilford
is by himself in third at 73.

Defending individual champion Robert Hoadley of Cameron Union Pines, who
was seventh in the 2006 state 3-A championship, is tied for 13th at 77, six
shots back.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open
tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four
classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action will resume at eight o¹clock on Tuesday morning.

Wendy¹s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
