BUIES CREEK -- Hampstead Topsail and East Surry have opened up a sizable

margin over the field after Monday¹s first day of the 11th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men¹s golf championships at the Keith Hills Country Club.
The championship is being contested on the Keith Hills II course, a par-72, 6500-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.
Topsail, fifth in last year¹s 1-A tournament, shot an even 300 and placed five igolfers among the top ten individuals. Topsail holds a five-shot lead over defending team champion East Surry, and Polk County is in third place but is 26 shots off the pace.
The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
Topsail¹s Joe Ondish has the individual lead after firing a brilliant three-under par 69, two shots ahead of defending 1-A individual champ John Welden of East Surry. Welden¹s teammate Ethan Grimmer is in third at 72 and Andrew Bateman of Andrews shot a 73.
Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
A total of 81 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action will resume at eight o¹clock on Tuesday morning.
Wendy¹s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
