KANNAPOLIS - A scoreless duel going into the bottom of the sixth inning turned into an 8-1 Northwest win over Central in the semifinals of the Intimidators Classic.

Northwest pitcher Matt Mariano and Central’s Chris Presnell matched zeroes until the Trojans finally broke through at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

The Trojans will play undefeated North Mecklenburg, defending tournament champion, tonight at 7 in the final.

Mariano, a left-hander, pitched a three-hitter, striking out 14 and walking four. He fanned six in a row in the third and fourth innings and finished the game with three consecutive strikeouts.
